Read More About Dog Shows
A dog will be examined to see if it fulfills the specific standards or not during a dog shows, breed shows or conformation shows. These are usually fun-filled events conducted by kennel clubs and breed clubs. Specialty shows are organized to examine only specific breeds.
Prior to the show, judges of the show have already set standards. Making subjective judgements is never easy so it is with choosing dogs which match the set standards. While comparing one dog with another, the dog is also compared to the judge’s image of an ideal dog which meet the breed standard almost perfectly. Selecting the winning dog requires it comes up to the breed standard necessary and that is the objective of the dog show.
From the the long list of breed standards which contributes to the conformation point, all the judges work together to frame the conformation point. Certain common requirements remain the same for all competitions although conformation points can vary from one competition to another. The fur is the most important factor, the pet’s color, pattern, length, type and quality are all observed. The judges will also be observing very carefully the distribution, quality and quantity of the markings.

The judges will also take into consideration a healthy pigmentation free skin and the shape and color of the head. The general attitude and temperament of each breed of dogs are also noted down. The judges will compare and take into consideration the mouth and structure of the teeth and how they align when the jaw is closed. The shape and color of the eyes and the shape and set of ears, including the ratio of the length and height are carefully taken into consideration. The style of walking and gait and also the shape of the feet and tail, projects the degree of grooming the dog has been undergoing, which counts toward the overall judging. Every participating dog should be registered with its name attached with the breeder’s kennel name.
Since every dog has a registered name and a call name, during the competition, the kennel club calls the dog by its registered name while the owner refers to it by its call name. Both local shows and national shows never fail to attract contenders from different parts of the country. The hierarchical nature of the competition qualifies only dogs that have won at each competition to enter the next competition.
To fulfil the aim of choosing the best in the breed, these shows at the highest level only allow pets which have already won championship in other shows. Since the dog shows are known to select the best dog in the breed, the price of the puppies of champions fetch a surprisingly high price. The popularity of the champion breed increases rapidly when pet buyers crowd around looking for a pet that looks like the champion. Out of the many dog shows taking place, Crufts in the UK and the Westminster Kennel Club Show in the United States are the two prestigious ones available.
